For indicator 1.1 material consumption, there is an option to calculate ecological footprint instead of waste per capita. The first resource listed http://www.ecocityfootprint.org is not accessible and the second one is for individuals not cities http://www.footprintnetwork.org. The last resource listed is for Brazil only https://www.dopastoaoprato.com.br/index.html. So how do we calculate the ecological footprint of a city?

Hi Sheena,
So far the cities that approached us used waste per capita (which we encourage to do). The UNI also mentioned that in addition to this ecological footprint that now is no longer available, the carbon footprint of a city can be measured.
You could calculate the carbon footprint of a given public transport here.
Hope this helps!

Dear Nasim,
This question refers to the online survey and I apologize in advance if I missed this explanation during our introductory session. Would it be possible to customize each survey with the name of the session + speaker and perhaps post the link at the end of each self-study module to track one’s responses? I don’t remember what answers I have given so far and what sessions I have yet to evaluate. Thank you very much,

Dear Maria,
Thank you for your suggestion. We currently conduct three evaluations, as this allows us to effectively monitor the results and ensure the data we gather is statistically significant.
Best wishes,
Nasim

Dear IUCN Team,
I’d like us to explore the possibility of having a practical experience on the UNI during our live sessions.
Why?
One of the striking features of UNI is its adaptability, i.e. the wide range of options it offers cities to assess and track their ecological performance. However, we are not witnessing such diversity with real cases in the course. By real cases I mean those cities already implementing the UNI listed here https://www.iucnurbannatureindexes.org/en/login
How? Here some ideas on how to bring this experience to the course.
Example with Module 4. Habitat Status
I find quite challenging to measure indicator 3.3 Shorelines and riverbanks so why not bringing a City Representative from the cases listed at https://www.iucnurbannatureindexes.org/en/login to see how they measured and reported back some of these indicators in real life. This could be 30 additional minutes after the keynote speaker and Q&A, on voluntarily basis. Or maybe, the theoretical block at the beginning could be shortener in sake of balancing out the practical block.
Example with Module 1. Consumption Drivers
While listening to Jennifer’s presentation, I wondered how low-income cities are measuring their ecological footprint. Why not introducing two different approaches to measure the same module by two cities with different capacity and income level?
Example – General
It would also be beneficial to listen to the testimony of some city or cities on the benefit of implementing this UNI – to what extend it has been transformative in the way the work with different stakeholders, report on their biodiversity plans, etc.
Kindly evaluate the feasibility of this proposal and I would love to hear from my colleagues as well. Let’s keep the conversation open!

Dear Maria,
Thank you for your suggestions! We have actually explored a more practical aspect during today’s live session and will continue to do so.
Keeping in mind that more detailed information, such as calculation of indicators can be found in the self-paced modules.
Best wishes,
Nasim
