New Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) approved in an expanding portfolio of global ocean areas needing urgent conservation measures.

The IUCN Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force is pleased to announce the creation of 33 new Important Marine Mammal Areas, called IMMAs, in the North East Atlantic Ocean and Baltic Sea.

We are delighted to share that the IUCN Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force has just approved 33 new Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) across our oceans! This significant milestone follows a year-long process of scientific evaluation and peer review.

These newly designated IMMAs, along with the re-assessment of previous candidate areas, bring our total count to 280 IMMAs globally, covering 13% of the examined ocean area. It's a vital step forward in conserving our marine biodiversity!

Join us in celebrating this achievement and learn more about the crucial role IMMAs play in marine conservation efforts. Let's continue working together towards a sustainable future for our oceans.
